LIRR Launches New Plan To 'Prevent And Protect'

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The head of the Long Island Rail Road has a message for customers: “We hear you.”

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, a plan to improve the system was outlined Monday.

The plan is called Long Island Rail Road Forward, and the goal is to accelerate maintenance work, be better prepared for weather-related problems, and provide better information for customers.

LIRR President Phillip Eng wants to change the mindset.

“We'll move beyond ‘fix and repair’ to get to ‘prevent and protect,’” he said.

That means in part focusing on equipment failure hotspots.

“I've implemented a new initiative to repair and replace our top ten most problematic switches in the next six months,” Eng said. “These switches along because over forty percent of the failures on our system.”

New third-rail heaters and tree trimming will also prevent weather delays, and GPS technology will provide more accurate train information, Eng said.
