Long Island Teacher Accused Of Sexually Abusing Student For 3 Years

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A Long Island teacher stood accused Friday of sexually abusing a teenage student for years.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, teacher Daniel McMenamin looked down as prosecutors said in court that the 33-year-old had sexual contact with a female student for three years – starting in 2014 when she was 14 years old.

McMenamin was a math teacher at the private Lawrence Woodmere Academy. Authorities said the victim was a student at the school.

“The only analogy I can make is as our Judge Kavanaugh – these are very old allegations,” said McMenamin’s attorney, William Jaye. “He believes, and has told me, they are not true.”

Jaye said his client is now a fill-in teacher in the Oceanside School District. McMenamin’s bail was set at $280,000 – a figure his attorney called excessive.

There is a protective order in place under which McMenamin is not allowed near the teenager.

The academy had no comment, and the Oceanside district did not return Hall’s request for comment.
