OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A man wielding a samurai sword was shot and killed by police responding to a domestic disturbance call at a home on Long Island.

Police say the 35-year-old man got into a fight with his father and sister and had knives in his hand when officers arrived at the scene on Columbus Avenue in Oceanside around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"The son was very distraught," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

Officers ordered the man to drop the weapons, but he refused.

Police said he then picked up a samurai sword and lunged at the officers, who fired several shots, killing the man.

Two officers at the scene were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Another officer was hurt in a car crash on the way to the scene.
Ryder said they had been called to the home in the past.

"The son is going through some difficult times, he had some mental illness that the father had explained to us," Ryder said. "It was just a tough situation that everybody was involved in and the officers did everything they could."
