NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio declared last week that his wife, Chirlane McCray, should be compensated for doing her job as New York City’s first lady.

McCray weighed in on the issue on Tuesday.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, the First Lady emphatically said no, she does not want to be paid for running the city’s mental health program called Thrive NYC. In fact, she went further.

“You know, I asked him today when he called me, you know, ‘Why did you say that?’ and I really didn’t get a good answer. I have no idea,” McCray said with a laugh. “We’re close – yes, I’m one of his advisers – but sometimes, husbands say things, and I have no explanation for why he brought that up. I really don’t. I would really like to get to the bottom of it.”

McCray also said she would consider running for public office.

“Do I think it’s time for a black woman mayor? I think it’d be fabulous,” she said. “But not just any black woman.”

When a reporter questioned how her husband would feel about being first man, McCray said, ‘I have not asked him that question, but I will later on today if I have the opportunity.’”
