MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Some residents in Suffolk County say their homes have been vibrating for months and they suspect a nearby sand mine is the culprit.

For the past 18 months, residents on a cul de sac in Middle Island say their well-manicured homes have been vibrating.

"It's like a nightmare, you know, you don't want to ever have to deal witht that," says one resident.

"All the windows vibrate, the shades in the windows vibrate, it's more of a percussion sound that you can hear in your ears that basically vibrates the whole house," another resident said.

Residents have reported cracked ceilings and walls. One mother of three says she had to pay a handyman to fix the problem more than once already.

"Yesterday from the vibration the mirror just fell off the wall," she said. "Over the last year I've felt more of my floor just having a vibration the other thing that we've experienced is just a lot of cracks. The left side of the corner of my den is cracked from the top to the bottom."

The residents believe a nearby sand mining operation is to blame.

Although the company has been in business for decades, about 18 months ago they started using new equipment, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

The attorney for the company says they are working with the residents and they will be doing further testing to see if it's the company's problem or if the vibrations are caused by something or someone else.
