It happened around 4 p.m. There were 40 people on the bus, officials said.

CHECK: Traffic Updates

There were some injuries, but all were described as minor, officials said.

The accident happened on the northbound Exit 13 ramp from the turnpike onto the bridge, which is elevated over the roadway.

WCBS 880’s Steve Burns reported the school bus was being towed onto its front wheels early Thursday evening after lying on its side with the rear emergency exit door wide open.

The bus belonged to a yeshiva in the Borough Park, Brooklyn area, Burns reported.

“It looks like that it was a malfunction on the bus; that the axle broke loose, on a very potentially dangerous place – the Goethals Bridge,” Rabbi Fishel Schachter told CBS2. “If you’ve ever been on the Goethals Bridge, you know there’s not a lot of room to maneuver, but thank God there’s only a few minor injuries – trauma or kids complaining that their hands hurt. It does not appear to be anything serious.”

The children on the bus were put on another school bus, while the injured were put on an ambulance.

The New Jersey State Police, the Linden Fire Department, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were at the scene, CBS2 reported.

WCBS 880 Traffic reported the ramp where the accident happened is closed with numerous emergency personnel on the scene. The ramp from the car lanes is also subject to closure.
