Missing Newark Mother's Body Found, Ex-Boyfriend Charged With Murder

NEWARK, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- The body of a missing Newark mother has been found after nearly a month, and her ex-boyfriend has been charged with her murder.

The ex-boyfriend’s brother has also been charged in the case.

Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s office said Julia Vega, 30, had last been seen on May 9.

Vegas, who worked at a day care center in Newark, went home at lunchtime to walk the family dog and was never seen again, police said.

On Friday, a decomposing body was found behind an abandoned house in Irvington, and it was identified as Vega’s body through dental records, police said.

Vega’s ex-boyfriend, Gualberto L. Lebron, 33, has been charged with her murder, police said.

He was also charged with conspiracy, robbery, burglary, stalking, witness tampering, hindering prosecution, desecrating human remains, eluding police, aggravated assault, possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, and related drug offenses.

His brother, Gilberto Lebron Jr., 34, has been charged with conspiracy, police said. He was charged specifically with to hindering prosecution, conspiracy to desecrate human remains, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of firearm on a school property.

A detention hearing for Gualberto Lebron is set for 9 a.m. Friday.
