Mother Of Girl Killed By MS-13 In Brentwood Is Struck, Killed On Way To Daughter's Memorial

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (WCBS 880/AP) -- A Long Island woman who was recognized by President Donald Trump at the State of the Union after her daughter was killed by MS-13 gang members was herself struck and killed by a car at her daughter's memorial late Friday.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, Rodriguez was preparing to honor her daughter, Kayla Cuevas, at a memorial on Stahley Street in Brentwood when the tragedy occurred. A woman behind the wheel of a sport-utility vehicle confronted Rodriguez, and moments later the woman ran over and killed Rodriguez.

It happened just feet away from where the body of her 16-year-old daughter, Kayla Cuevas, was found two years ago.

U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-New York) was on his way to the memorial when he received the awful news.

“It’s such a tragedy. If there’s anything at least symbolically good, it’s the fact that she will be with her daughter, and certainly, she’s the best mother and advocate that her daughter could ever have,” King said.

Kayla and her 15-year-old friend, Nisa Mickens, were murdered by MS-13 gang members in Brentwood. Rodriguez worked hard to fight the gang problem, and even met with President Trump.

“I don’t think I ever spoke to Evelyn when she was not talking about Kayla,” King said. “She was absolutely dedicated as a mother, but also as somebody in the community who didn’t want any other parent to go through what she went through.”

Trump himself offered a tweet of sympathy Friday night.

There was no word late Friday on whether the driver of the SUV was arrested.
