Motorists Complain Of Endless Wait Times At DMV

WEST HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Following horror story complaints involving people getting stuck at the West Haverstraw Department of Motor Vehicles office for half a day, there are calls for changes.

As WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported, trips to the DMV are infamous for being long and tedious. But can your last trip compete with this?

“I waited four and a half hours yesterday, and then the lady told me that I was missing one signature, and then I went back today,” said Brian Ferguson of New City.

Ferguson said he sat for another two hours waiting to register his car with the DMV. The complaints are pouring into the office of state Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski Jr. (D-New City).

“People taking time off work, trying to get their kids to be watched, and they’re literally sitting here. They can’t go to the bathroom. And it’s just outrageous,” Zebrowksi said.

Zebrowski has asked the DMV to investigate. He suspects the office is short-staffed and backed up as people apply for Real ID-compliant licenses.

“We need to start thinking about expanded online services, mobile vans, maybe an additional Rockland office, or satellite offices that do some of the services around here,” he said.

The DMV disputes the claims of excruciating wait times. An official said they service most customers in less than an hour.
