NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Multiple students were injured Thursday when an escalator malfunctioned at Stuyvesant High School in Lower Manhattan.

Ten children were evaluated after the incident around 3:45 p.m. at the school, at 345 Chambers St., according to published reports.

One student reportedly lost part of a toe, reports said.

“The safety of students and staff is our top priority,” said a Department of Education statement as quoted by CBS2. “FDNY and EMS responded to a serious incident involving an escalator at Stuyvesant High School and students are being treated for non-life threatening injuries. We’re providing the school, students, and families with additional support and will conduct an investigation.”

Officials late Thursday were trying to determine whether surveillance video would reveal information about the incident said FDNY Deputy Chief Joseph Schiralli.

It was not clear whether overcrowding had any role in causing the accident.
