BAYONNE, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Officials in New Jersey are trying to identify a mysterious odor that's stinking up Bayonne and Jersey City.

Residents have been complaining for days about the stench.

On Facebook, descriptions of the smell ranged from "rotten fish" to "garbage" to "burning hair or flesh."

The Hudson Regional Health Commission confirmed the odor earlier this week, but the source has yet to be determined, according to the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management, which believes the smell could possibly be coming from the Newark area.

"Probably from Newark-processing plants," one person speculated, to which the emergency management office replied, "That’s what we suspect also, but HRHC wouldn’t tip their hand until they did a proper investigation."

Residents are encouraged to report the smell by calling the HRHC at 201-223-1133 or the NJ DEP Hotline at 1-877-927-6337.

"The HRHC is committed to working with Bayonne residents on identifying the source of this odor and needs to be notified immediately," the emergency management office said.
