New York American Water Customers Say Their Bills Are Out Of Control

SEA CLIFF, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Customers of New York American Water say they are getting slammed with double, triple, or even quadruple the amount they are used to.

“Some people are now getting $700 bills; $800 bills,” said an angry Tara Brasch. “There’s no way my family can afford that.”

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, Brasch cannot understand why after nine years of living in her Oceanside home, her water bill is suddenly ridiculously high.

“The usage seems incorrect. The rates seem incorrect,” she said.

Brasch said the problems began two months ago. Her June bill was $250, and then her July bill was $350 – and two of the weeks in that month, she said her family was on vacation and not even home.

“This bill this month – this is more than my car payment,” she said.

A New York American Water spokeswoman issued a statement saying a detailed review of customers’ electric meters will be conducted.

“New York American Water takes every customer contact seriously. The accuracy of our meters is critical to our service commitment. Our customer service team has already been working with several customers regarding questions about their water bills,” the statement said. “We can assure our customers and stakeholders that we are taking the appropriate hard look at this issue.”

The company gave $65 credits to customers in the Sea Cliff area, after New York American Water admitted to overcharging those residents.

New York state is also now investigating.
