NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — On the first days of 2020, New Yorkers finally got down to the nittiest, grittiest question of the decade: What subway seat is best?

The debate began with a viral tweet showing an image of five subway seats found on a number of older subway lines – most widely seen on the letter lines – numbered 1-5.

The Tweet received over 12,000 replies but many seemed to agree that 5 and 1 were the best places to seat. Those who vouched for 1 noted it gives the most elbow room and is close to the doors, while 5 gives some free space (so long as 4 is empty.)

Those who vouched for 4 said it was nice to seclude oneself from the rest of the crowd on the train, but noted that taller individuals would be cramped with the lack of leg room.

The MTA weighed in on the debate saying trying to pick a favorite seat was like trying to pick a favorite child.

One thing that a majority of people agreed on: many would rather stand than take seat No. 2.
