N.J. Law Makes It Easier For Transgender Residents To Change Birth Certificates

TRENTON, N.J. (WCBS 880/AP) -- A new law in New Jersey will make it easier for transgender people to change their gender on their birth certificates.

Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill on Tuesday. It eliminates a previous requirement that a doctor certified that a person’s gender was surgically changed.

The new law allows the registrar to amend certificates based on how people identify themselves, as either male, female or “undesignated.”

Republican Gov. Chris Christie had twice vetoed the legislation, saying he wanted tighter safeguards for birth certificate alterations.

Murphy also signed legislation permitting gender identity to be listed on death certificates.
