NEW YORK (WCBS 880) --  It's getaway day for hundreds of thousands in the area ahead of Labor Day and at Penn Station, the Long Island Rail Road is adding extra service to try and help speed things up.

For a few hours, LIRR will run eight extra trains Friday to help people get a jump start on their holiday weekend.

"We typically run a 128 trains in the PM rush. These eight extra trains will greatly improve their PM travels today," LIRR President Phil Eng said, adding that the extra service will help give riders flexibility on when to leave. "But also give more capacity to the other riders that are going on their normal trains."

Once people get back from the long weekend, they'll have some help their too.

Amtrak completed its summer track work on time, which means starting Tuesday, the LIRR will be restoring normal rush hour service.

"And that means extra trains during the morning and afternoon rush starting next week," Eng said.

Fourteen LIRR rush hour trains had to be canceled or rerouted over the summer to accomodate the track work.
