KENT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The tornadoes that hit Putnam County during the storms Tuesday were the first to hit the county since 1990, and the most severe since a year before that.

The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a tornado hit the Putnam County community of Kent during the storm. The twister was an EF-2 on the Fujita scale – with estimated winds of up to 110 mph.

The storm prediction center said such tornadoes can cause considerable damage – tearing roof off well-constructed homes, shifting foundations of frame homes, destroying trailers and mobile homes completely, snapping and uprooting trees, and lifting cars off the ground.

Another tornado, this one an EF1 with winds of 100 mph, hit the Putnam County community of Patterson on Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported.

The last recorded tornado in Putnam County was on June 29, 1990. It was an F0 tornado, as the measurement went at the time, and caused no injuries, according to the National Weather Service.

On July 10, 1989, an F2 tornado struck Putnam County and injured five people, according to the NWS.

A New York Times report from the time said the tornado touched down at 5:57 p.m. that evening in Carmel and swept through neighboring Brewster about a minute later.

The wind in the 1989 tornado tore off a roof, and also damaged the façade of a condominium development in Carmel, the Times reported. Two residents there suffered minor injuries in the tornado, the Times reported.

The 1989 Times report quoted a woman named Patricia Crumblish, who was home with her then-5-year-old granddaughter, Adriana Jaramillo, when the tornado blew into the playroom and ripped off half the roof of her house.

The Times quoted Crumblish in the 1989 report: ''My granddaughter said, 'This is the worst day of my life, Grandma.' She said she thought she was in Kansas in 'The Wizard of Oz.' ''

The Putnam County tornado in 1989 was one of at least three that struck the area on July 10, 1989. That storm also killed a 13-year-old girl in a state park in Connecticut, the Times reported.

An F2 tornado also struck Putnam County on July 29, 1971, while an F1 tornado hit on Aug. 9, 1968, according to the National Weather Service. Neither caused injuries, the NWS reported.
