NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Hundreds of cancer survivors and those going through treatment attended the 2nd Annual Beauty Against Cancer at NYPD headquarters on Tuesday.

The auditorium of 1 Police Plaza was transformed into a flower-filled day spa for the event, which featured make-up artists, skincare professionals and more.

"Today is about strength and empowerment," said three-time cancer survivor Lt. Quathisha Epps, who is one of the event's organizers. "From the moment they sit down, we want them to feel special."

Several officers grew and donated their hair to be made into wigs.

NYPD Detective Leiddy Zuber was the first volunteer donating her long black hair in memory of father-in-law who died of kidney cancer last December.

"It's something that makes me feel good and it makes my husband feel happy," Zuber said.

Epps hopes this event helps make a difference.

"To be able to sit in a room full of survivors and see that it is not just you, that within itself gives someone strength to get from one day to the next," Epps said.
