NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Police were called to lower Manhattan on Tuesday to investigate reports of a suspicious package but instead found a man reportedly trying to set himself on fire.

The incident was reported around 4:30 p.m. when the department received a report of a suspicious package near West and Vesey streets.

The package was deemed safe, but authorities were still trying to determine what type of liquid the man poured on himself. It’s believed it was possibly gasoline.

Police said the man was emotionally disturbed and he was taken into custody.

The incident drew a heavy police response to the area, bringing traffic on West Street to a halt during the evening rush-hour.

While the area was cleared around 6 p.m., drivers were told to expect residual delays throughout their commutes.

No other information about the suspect was immediately available.
