NYPD: JFK Airport Drug Probe Leads Police To Huge Arsenal In The Bronx

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- At One Police Plaza Thursday, authorities described a case that began as an illegal drug investigation – but ended up leading them to an arsenal in the Bronx.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, police have now tracked down and arrested a suspect.

“This case actually began in September of 2017 with a very simple seizure of 49 pills of Xanax at the JFK international mail facility," said U.S. Customs and Border Protection Port Director Frank Russo said.

Customs and Border Patrol developed a case thanks to their ability to leverage data from such drug shipments, often from China and Hong Kong, Russo said.

Police went to Palmer Avenue, the Bronx address of Richard Laguel, who is out on bail after being accused of trying to blow up a car with a homemade bomb two years ago.

In his apartment, in addition to the illegal drugs, the NYPD allegedly found an AR-15 assault rifle, a grenade launcher, and three handguns.

“I think it’s self-evident in terms he was not up to anything good, as what you can see here, as well as the drugs that are not displayed on this table,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

Police also found a teddy bear that contained approximately 30 grams of cocaine.
