NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The NYPD released body camera footage on Friday of a fatal police-involved shooting on Staten Island.

The footage is from a Sept. 17 incident, during which officers attempted to take domestic violence suspect Gregory Edwards into custody. When Edwards resisted, a gunfight ensued and a female officer was struck in the hand.

Edwards was struck twice in the back and died from his injuries.

The recording was the first the be released by police under a new initiative that requires footage of “critical” incidents be made public within 30 days.

NYPD Deputy Chief Kevin Maloney says the sometimes disturbing footage will allow people to “gain a better understanding of the events that led up to the incident.”

Since the incident, Officer Vanesa Medina has been discharged from the hospital after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The NYPD says the investigation is still ongoing.
