NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The NYPD on Monday showed reporters a brand new vehicle intended to battle animal cruelty.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, the newest investigative tool in the arsenal of the NYPD’s Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad is a $500,000 truck donated by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

It is intended as a command post in cases where large numbers of animals are involved.

“Everywhere I go, I speak about the efforts with all the other agencies. I usually talk about the FBI, the DEA, the Marshals’ service, the ATF, the prosecutors, and so many, many more that help us target terrorists, gangs, and, you know, so-called traditional bad guys,” said police Commissioner James O’Neill. “But the work that we do at the ASPCA is really, truly important, and it’s no different. It’s vital to the health of our city, and to maintaining civility in our society.”

The commissioner noted that the ASPCA and the NYPD partnership plays a critical role in battling cruelty and abuse, and upholds the city’s commitment to protect the most vulnerable among us – in this case, our animals.
