NYS, Other States Sue Trump Administration After Being Denied Public Safety Grants

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New York state and several other states are suing the Trump administration, after being denied public safety grants over immigration policy.

In the eyes of New York state and New York City, the Department of Justice withholding millions in public safety grants is unfair and unlawful, WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported. So along with New Jersey and Connecticut and a handful of other states, they are suing the Trump administration.

The federal government will not dole out the funds unless so-called sanctuary jurisdictions cooperate fully with immigration agents.

New York does hold some illegal immigrants for Immigration and Customs Enforcement – those convicted of felonies.

But New York does not hold all undocumented immigrants, for fear that that population would go underground and not come forward to report crimes.

In New York, the money would go toward 911 operators, crime analysts, and prosecutors.

The lawsuits claim the new conditions violate the constitution.

The DOJ is standing firm, saying the plaintiffs are protecting criminal aliens.
