NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The NYPD suffered a terrible loss after an off-duty officer took his life on Monday, officials confirm.

A 29 year veteran, and a 9-11 first responder, 53-year-old  Detective Paul Federico reportedly died in his mother's house in Queens.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. in Middle Village, according to a report from the Daily News.

Federico was assigned to the police commissioner's liaison office.

"Today, the members of the Detectives’ Endowment Association mourn the loss of our brother, Det. Paul Federico," the NYC Detectives' Endowment Association tweeted. "Paul was a dedicated 29-year veteran of the NYPD whose kindness and caring personality touched thousands of fellow cops and New Yorkers."

In 2019, the NYPD suffered 10 suicides within the department. As a result the NYPD launched suicide prevention methods.
