NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An off-duty correction officer has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of his uncle on New Year's Day on the Upper West Side.

Officials say 37-year-old Steven Gadsden was killed inside a car on West 107th Street and Manhattan Avenue before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say three men who knew each other were arguing in the car before the driver stopped.

Two of the men then got out, continued exchanging words, and then shots were fired, according to authorities.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Saint Luke's Hospital where police say he was pronounced dead.

The officer ran off but later returned to the scene where he was arrested. He was later identified as 30-year old Cardell Gadsden. He is charged with murder and criminal use of a firearm.

The investigation remains ongoing.
