Officials To Drivers: Watch Out For Deer During Mating Season

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Officials are warning local drivers – including those in New York City – to watch out for deer.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, this is the mating season for white-tailed deer. New York AAA’s John Corlet had a warning.

"October, November, December are the peak months for deer and automobile collisions, and in fact we just did an analysis of New York State data that showed that deer crashes are on the increase in New York State, so it's something that everybody should be concerned about. If you're headed out for a road trip or a long weekend and are particularly going (to) Upstate New York, it's something that you should be mindful of," Corlet said.

In fact, in the last three months of last year, there were 9,700 deer crashes in New York state – about one every 15 minutes.

The AAA says don’t swerve to avoid a deer. If you go right, you could hit a tree, and if you go left, you could hit another vehicle head-on – both likely to be worse than striking a deer.
