NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The NYPD is on alert following a "credible threat" that someone might target police officers in the Bronx days after two officers were shot and wounded in what officials described an assassination attempt.

The Daily News reports the threat came from an MS-13 gang member in ICE custody.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association tweeted out an internal NYPD memo warning officers to remain vigilant and to continue extra security measures.

They also warned officials to "REMAIN ALERT" and to  respond with back up on all 911 calls received.

A tweet from the Detectives' Endowment Association warns NYPD to "stay vigilant," adding that officers should "do what you are trained to do when you are met with deadly physical force."

Police officers could be seen guarding the entrance to the 41st Precinct stationhouse on Friday morning. WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported police vehicles with flashing lights are posted in front and at the side driveway.

Last weekend, a gunman ambushed a police van injuring one officer and hours later opened fire inside the 41st Precinct police station striking a lieutenant in the arm.

Robert Williams, 45, has been charged with attempted murder.
