NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The Administration for Children’s Services finds itself in the headlines when a child is harmed in New York City, but on Monday, City Hall turned around and thanked its workers for what they do.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, Children’s Services Commissioner David Hansel had his cadre of frontline child protective services specialists standing behind him as he praised them.

“It’s a tough job, and it’s a job that requires around-the-clock responsibilities,” Hansel said the specialists, whom he called New York’s “first responders for children.”

Maria Tavares of the Bronx, a single mother of four boys and a domestic violence survivor, credited child protective service specialists at ACS for saving her family.

“I was in a dark place and it was like a light that shined on me and my family and showed me what I needed – the needs and the goals that I needed to reach to be the woman that I am today,” Tavares said. “And I’m proud that I could talk about my story and not break down, but be proud that I’m here.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio smiled as he also praised the smiling gathered child protective specialists.

“You know when you’ve helped a family to heal their wounds and address their problems. You know it. I wish the rest of us knew it more often,” de Blasio said. “”And we have to do everything we can to spread that news.”
