NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A group of parents are petitioning Gov. Andrew Cuomo to call for New York State to allow high school sports teams to hold training camps again.

With football season right around the corner, students and parents are anxious for training to resume.

Kim Ulses, who has two boys that play football for St. Joseph’s by the Sea on Staten Island, is behind the petition asking for high school sports to resume.

She says her sons need the activity, socialization and freedom.

“It's important for their mental health, their physical health,” she said.

The petition is titled, “Let the Kids Play,” and calls on Gov. Cuomo to give the go-ahead for student athletes to return to their fields not that the state has overcome the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our main goal is to have the governor hear us and reconsider the prohibition on the sport,” Ulses said.

She notes that she has watched the COVID-19 numbers declining and feels it safe for kids to play, but she understands there's risk

“The feeling is at this point, any place you go you can be exposed,” she said.

There are other similar efforts across the state.
