NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Police have arrested a homeless man who attacked a woman in Hudson Square while she was on her way to a fitness class.

Authorities say the 23-year-old victim was attacked as she left a subway station at West Houston and Varick streets around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

She said she was crossing the street, a homeless man suddenly came at her and punched her in the face. The attack was so forceful, she lost two teeth.

Police later identified the man as 26-year-old Eugene Webb.

The victim told CBS2 the suspect was yelling incoherently and seemed to be slurring his words when he attacked.

“I tried to start running away, and then while that happened, I was pushed to the ground and then continued to be punched,” she said. “I was screaming for help and trying to say ‘stop.’”

The victim was transported to Beth Israel Hospital in stable condition, and treated for facial bruises and oral injuries.

Authorities released images and surveillance video of Webb as they searched for him.

It remains unclear where authorities captured the suspect.

He is charged with two counts of assault and one count of harassment.
