NEW YORK (WCBS 880) --  The body of a newborn baby was found in an empty parking lot in Orange County late Tuesday night.

The gruesome discovery was made in Port Jervis at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers found the body on a few rocks with its umbilical cord attached, authorities said.

Police Chief William Worden tells The Times Herald-Record that police identified and interviewed the baby's mother but no charges have been filed.

Police did not say if the child died before or after birth.

The Orange County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on the remains.

Police are interviewing neighbors and looking for any witnesses. They hope someone will come forward with information on the incident at 39 Orange Street.
