At Least 1 Person Injured After Building Collapses In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A Brooklyn building housing a fitness center suddenly collapsed Wednesday afternoon, causing minor injuries to at least one person.

The incident happened at 348 Court St. near the intersection of Union and Court streets in Carroll Gardens around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Body Elite gym was located in the building. Gyms have been closed as part of the coronavirus shutdown.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the situation, his press secretary tweeted.


Photos from the scene showed the three-story building completely leveled.

An NYPD spokesperson tells WCBS 880 the building was vacant. but there was at least one minor injury reported.

According to WABC-TV, partial stop work order was issued for failure to maintain the building, which appeared to be under construction.

The first floor of the building was in the process of getting an “exterior makeover,” according to the gym's Facebook page.

The FDNY, NYPD and Office of Emergency Management all responded to the scene.

The NYPD tweeted, "Avoid Court Street between Atlantic Avenue and 1st Place, and Union Street, from Henry Street to Smith Street, so that emergency operations may proceed."

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
