HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A stolen car led to shots being fired by police in Hempstead early Tuesday, police said.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, it was a very chaotic morning for residents of Hempstead near Front Street.

Authorities said when officers tried to make a traffic stop for the driver of a stolen sport-utility vehicle, that driver instead fled – striking two parked cars along with almost hitting a Hempstead police officer.

Two shots were fired by police, but the gunshots did not hit anyone.

One of the vehicles hit a box truck, police said. That driver had to be extricated and suffered a broken leg.
