Police say surveillance video shows the man strangling Fuertes until she falls to the ground.

Her 52-year-old son says when he was in the ambulance with her after the attack, she had bruising near her chest and a gash on her head.

Officials say she died by the time they rushed her to Jamaica Hospital.

Fuertes was affectionately known as the "cat lady." Neighbors say she would come out at night to feed stray animals.

The suspect is described as having a medium complexion, average build, black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark colored pants, and black shoes.

An investigation is on-going and police urge anyone with information to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-8477.
