GREAT NECK, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A police officer shot and killed a man in Great Neck, Long Island Monday morning after that man allegedly attacked multiple people with a baseball bat during a road rage incident.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, it happened on Maple Street in Great Neck not far from an Equinox gym. Nassau County police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said a man in a Volkswagen with out-of-state plates was at the stop sign with two vans behind him.

The Volkswagen driver was not moving, so one driver honked his horn, Ryder said. At that point, the subject allegedly got out of the vehicle and broke the windows of both vans. One driver was hit in the head with the bat, and the suspect then went after a police officer who was on patrol.

"The subject kept coming at him with that bat. He Tased the individual,” Ryder said. “It fazed him a little bit, but did not stop him."

The suspect then hit a passerby with the bat, and the officer fired two shots and killed the suspect, Ryder said.

"He did an outstanding job today under the circumstances," Ryder said.

The two people hit with the bat were recovering Monday afternoon at a local hospital.
