NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The search was on for a suspect Sunday after police said a 10-year-old Bronx girl was thrown to the floor and kicked in the face – all for her cellphone.

The robbery happened around 4:50 p.m. Friday, May 25, as the girl was entering her building near Holland Avenue and Pelham Parkway North in the Allerton section of the Bronx, police said.

Police said the man followed the girl into the vestibule, grabbed her iPhone 7 Plus, and violently attacked her.

The girl had been using the iPhone to FaceTime with her mom on her way home from a deli across the street.

The girl’s mother spoke with CBS2.

“She was bleeding. She had some bruises. She said, ‘Mommy, they broke my favorite glasses,’” the girl’s mother said.

Police said the girl’s condition was stable. But her mother said, “She’s still pretty scared to go outside by herself.”

Police have released surveillance video and photos of the suspect.
