UNION, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- A Walmart in New Jersey was evacuated as police investigated reports of a masked person armed with a gun in the store.

The store, located  on Springfield Road off Route 22 in Union Township, was placed on lockdown around 11 a.m. Thursday as police conducted a search.

Customers left their shopping carts behind and ran for the exits when police yelled for people to evacuate.

Police say the reports were unfounded and the store has since reopened.

Many across the country have been on edge since the back-to-back mass shootings at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas on Aug. 3 and a popular nightlife area the next day in Dayton, Ohio.
