NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The New York City Housing Authority may have downplayed just how bad water tanks are at city housing projects.

As WCBS 880’s Kevin Rincon reported Wednesday, internal documents at NYCHA show drinking water tanks had some issues. Dead birds, squirrels and other things were found floating and growing inside them.

But a report in the magazine City & State found those details were omitted from Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reports.

NYCHA told the magazine it is reviewing how inspection reports are filled out to ensure tank cleaning and inspections are reliable.

Rincon reached out to the city and had yet to hear back late Wednesday afternoon.

The review of NYCHA records also showed more than 70 instances of alterations to inspection forms. While some were corrections, tank cleaners the magazine spoke to said the forms failed to mention contamination they saw inside the tanks.
