NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- WCBS 880 would like to congratulate one of our own, reporter Mike Sugerman, for winning an Edward R. Murrow Award.

Sugerman was honored Monday night for best video reporting for his Sweet Spot feature.

Every week, Sugerman hits the streets with his trusty iPhone in hand to uncover the hidden gems of the Tri-State area. Watch more episodes here.

Last April, he met the Rev. Georgiette Morgan-Thomas. She had 100 hats in her collection, but the factory many of them came from was about to shut down.

So, at the drop of a hat, she decided to buy the nearly 100-year-old S&S hat factory in Philadelphia, saving a dozen jobs.

She rebranded the factory as American Hats, opened a storefront in Harlem, and started making newer, hipper hats like fedoras. She changed hat-making techniques, and in 2017 sold 3,000 hats – an increase of 40 per cent.

"When I got there I could just tell it was going to be a fun video story because it had so many elements — it had people sewing and the machines and the noise and the people sweating and then all the hats with the fashion and she was so animated," Sugerman said. "It just sort of took on a life of its own."

Sugerman says as a journalist and storyteller you have to be curious.

"You have to want to know about things and people," he says. "I like to know the trivial stuff about people and what makes them tick and why they're interesting. Once you get them talking they say some incredible things."

As for his Murrow Award win, Sugerman calls it a huge honor.

"I still am having trouble process it," he says. "Tim Scheld, who is the news director, took a chance on letting me do videos on the radio. It's video on radio, that doesn't sound right, but he took a chance on hiring me to do video and radio stories and I never in a million years would've thought that it would've won a Murrow Award."

The Murrow Awards honor outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism.

We also want to congratulate our network friends at CBS Radio for winning the overall excellence award and our sister station in San Francisco KCBS Radio for best newscast.
