NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A retired NYPD officer took his life at his home on Long Island last week.

Multiple reports say Officer Daniel Shirreffs, 46, hanged himself in his home in Seaford on Thursday.

Shirreffs was on the job for more than 20 years and was last assigned to the Driver Training Bureau.

This is the second NYPD suicide this year.

Last Monday, 53-year-old Detective Paul Federico, a 29-year veteran and a 9/11 first responder, was found dead in his mother's house in Queens in an apparent suicide.

In 2019, the NYPD suffered 10 active-duty suicides within the department.
