Rockaways Become First NYC Community To Get Dockless Bike Sharing

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday visited the Far Rockaway boardwalk to kick off a new era of bikesharing in New York City.

As WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond reported, Mayor de Blasio rode into the news conference on a dockless bike.

He declared: "This is the very first neighborhood that will have it. Congratulations to the Rockaways."

Two companies, Lime Bike and Pace, will operate on the peninsula.

"We have 100 bikes to start today – super excited," said Lime Bike chief executive officer Tony Son. "By the end of this month, we're also hoping to add another 100 electric system bikes."

Unlike CitiBike and similar systems, riders do not have to park dockless bikes in a designated area. The bikes self-lock after the customers ride is up.

Dockless bike sharing will also be coming to the South Shore of Staten Island, the Fordham section of the Bronx, and Coney Island, Brooklyn this summer.
