RYE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Rye Playland will not open this year.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer tells WCBS 880 the amusement park could not be opened and operated safely during the pandemic.

"We don't think we can realistically social distance, we don't think we can realistically sanitize all the surfaces that little kids would be putting their hands on, and it realistically is something that for the benefit of public health we need to keep closed this year," Latimer said. "It really became a logistical nightmare to try to figure out how we could handle it."

Latimer says the county will move up the schedule for capital improvements that were planned for the park.

The Playland beach and boardwalk are open to county residents, but the pool will be closed.

A mini golf course and nature preserve at the complex are also open.

Westchester opened two of its county-owned pools last week with the intention of opening two more this week.
