Schumer: Heating, Cooling System Is A Disaster At Northport VA Hospital

NORTHPORT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The only Veterans Affairs hospital on Long Island is in desperate need of a new heating and cooling system.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, the VA hospital in Northport opened in the 1920s. At that time, the hospital would cool off rooms by opening the windows.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-New York) said Tuesday that sadly, because of the old, rundown heating and cooling system, things are not much better all these years later.

The senator is calling on the feds to allocate $15 million to the Northport VA to fix the ailing system.

“It’s hard to believe, but the dog days of summer are on our doorstep. And to do surgery and treatment, you need a temperature that’s relatively temperate,” Schumer said. “Surgeries have been postponed, and buildings have had to shut down because of an outworn heating and cooling system. To shut down treatment for our veterans is an absolute disgrace.”

Schumer said rats have even been found in the system.
