July 05, 2018 - 3:45 pm

WASHINGTON (WCBS 880/CBS News) -- President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that he has accepted the resignation of Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt.

Pruitt has been embroiled in several controversies, but Trump praised him in the tweet.

“I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency,” Trump tweeted Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this.”

Deputy Andrew Wheeler will assume the duties as acting administrator on Monday, Trump tweeted.

“I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda,” Trump tweeted. “We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!”

Several top aides have left the EPA after Pruitt told lawmakers that his subordinates were to blame for alleged ethical lapses that have prompted more than a dozen federal investigations. The alleged lapses include spending on Pruitt's behalf for round-the-clock security guards, first-class plane tickets, and a $43,000 soundproof telephone booth.

He has also been criticized for a super-sweet rental agreement for a condo connected to a Washington lobbyist.

There were also reports Wednesday that Pruitt directly asked Trump to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and make Pruitt attorney general.
