TRENTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) — As coronavirus continues to spread rapidly in New Jersey, the state is looking to dramatically increase hospital bed capacity by setting up field hospitals.

Mirroring recent moves in New York, where field hospitals have been established in Central Park and the Jacob Javits Center, New Jersey is set to open its first field hospital this week at the Meadowlands Convention center.

“That was constructed with the ARMY Corps of Engineers, which I and the federal delegation asked the administration to let the ARMY Corps help us, which they did,” explains Sen. Bob Menendez.

He and Gov. Phil Murphy said the hospital will greatly expand healthcare capacity.

“It’s the first of four different hospitals that will be set up across the state and what I saw was eight facilities that, hopefully, on Monday, will begin to be able to receive the patients and cane take some of the necessary needed burden off of our existing hospitals,” the senator added.

Menendez also announced that New Jersey has received its first chunk of funding from the $2.2 trillion stimulus package.

“In addition to the $3.4 billion in state stabilization funds that occurred, you will hear we announced $82 million in grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to our communities and counties in community development block grants,” he explained.

The senator tells WCBS 880’s Michael Wallace that there are already talks about the need for a second stimulus package and said he agrees.

“I think we need to get ahead of this entire challenge,” the senator said. “We need to be thinking of what's needed next. I know in the states of New Jersey and New York and others that are hardest hit, you know, some of the resources that are going to be necessary to deal with the state revenue challenges.”

Two more field hospitals will follow the Meadowlands in Edison at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center and in Atlantic City at the Atlantic City Convention Center, according to Gov. Murphy.
