WEST POINT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The challenges for West Point cadets are great, but the rewards are even greater – especially for those graduating on Saturday.

WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell heard from a soon-to-be officer from Westchester County Thursday.

As he prepares to leave West Point, the sky is the limit for Michael Gabrielsen.

"Towards the end of summer, I'm going down Fort Rucker in Alabama for flight school, and I'm going to learn to be a helicopter pilot,” Gabrielsen said.

Gabrielsen majored in engineering management after graduating from Hendrick Hudson High School. He came to West Point for the track team and faced something of a culture shock.

"I was a senior in high school, kind of just sliding by,” he said, “and then coming here for the first years – quite a shock, not really having any free time at all."

Gabrielsen, 21, threw the javelin for four years.
