Specially-Trained Fire Squad Coming To Staten Island

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A new fire company is coming to Staten Island, and officials say it will add much-needed capability to the FDNY’s assets.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported Friday, the department’s first squad on Staten Island will be housed at Engine 154. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro thinks it is a big deal.

"They'll be right here on Staten Island, and that's a tremendous comfort to the people here, and to the firefighters who also benefit from the skills of out squad members," he said.

FDNY Chief of Department Jim Leonard explained that squad members receive additional training.

"First of all, they can operate – they're all hazmat technicians,” he said. “They have the ability to work in confined spaces. They also have the ability to work high-angle.”

Squad 80 will be open by the end of the year. The closest squad is now in Park Slope.
