NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A speeding van pinned an officer to his vehicle after it struck the police car during a routine traffic stop Tuesday night on the Lower East Side, officials say.

Around 8 p.m, at East Houston and Avenue D officers pulled over a van that according to one witness, was traveling really fast.

"I just so happened to look up and I saw basically a van just traveling real fast. Like real close to the cop car, so I just moved out the way and just smacked us because we was standing between the cop car and my car."

The van sped off, but police say they were able to find the van and arrest the driver a few blocks away.

The officer suffered a leg injury, but will make a full recovery.
