NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The man who was caught on video picking up a woman on a subway train and carrying her off now says that he was trying to help her.

In a video posted to Instagram, Sonny Alloway, 48, says that the woman told him that she needed his help.

"She was like, this dude is holding me hostage," Alloway says in the video. "I said, then get off the train. She was like, nah, he's gonna beat me up."

He claims that he told her ahead of time that he would pick her up and move her off the train, and that he was surprised when she started yelling.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning on a 6 train in the Bronx, and was recorded by another passenger.

Alloway was later attacked by a group of men who recognized him from the incident.

Alloway was arrested and reportedly charged with unlawful imprisonment, though in the Instagram video, he claims that the police cleared his name and released him.
