Driver Hit, Killed By Flying Tire On Sunrise Highway

July 05, 2018 - 5:25 pm

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A person was killed on the Sunrise Highway Thursday, when an unknown vehicle lost a tire in North Babylon.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, the accident happened Thursday afternoon on the westbound side of the highway.

Police said a tire somehow flew off a vehicle on Route 231 – which is not exactly close to the area. The tire bounced onto the Sunrise Highway and then smashed into a Saturn, police said.

The person who had been driving the Saturn died instantly, police said.

The tire then kept going and struck another vehicle, police said.

That sport-utility vehicle belonged to Mary DeFranco Garone. She said neither she nor her passenger was injured.

“That poor person, whoever they are, you know, just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Garone said.

Garone was very shaken up.

“I’m still a little bit numb. I don’t know what it felt like. I was just, like I said, lucky to be alive.”

“She just kept saying, over and over and over again: ‘I’m so thankful to be alive! I’m so thankful to be alive!’” Hall said.

Police late Thursday afternoon were not saying what kind of vehicle lost the tire or tires, or where on the vehicle the tire was believed to have been attached. But police said they were searching for the vehicle and the driver, because the driver did not stop.
