Survey: Suffolk County Plastic Bag Fee Has Changed Consumer Habits

April 19, 2018 - 4:02 pm

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A 5-cent plastic bag fee in Suffolk County has had an effect on consumer habits.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall saw plenty of shoppers walk in with reusable bags to do their shopping at a plaza in Suffolk County.

The image is a lot different compared with last year before the fee went into effect. Adrienne Esposito from the Citizens Campaign for the Environment said 71 percent used plastic bags in the county at this time a year ago.

Now, she said: “70 percent of the public are not using plastic. We’ve had an exact change in the public behavior that we hoped for with the bill. Before the legislation, 6 percent of the public carried reusable bags. Now we have 34 percent of the public carry reusable bags.”
